His full name is Abou Yacoub Youssef Ali as-Sanhaji al-Mubtali and is one of the 7 saints of Marrakesh, renowned for his great patience, forbearance and acceptance of the divine decree. Born and raised in Marrakech, he was afflicted with leprosy at a young age and was said to have been banished from living within the city walls. He was nicknamed “the man of the hole”, presumably because he dug a hole outside the city where he spent much time in seclusion. He was buried outside the Bab Aghmat, where he had lived.
